After Doctor Bannerjee’s death, his wife Jaya goes to live with Suchitra in the US. Their house in Delhi, A 46 Gulabganj, is kept boarded up and shut; waiting to be sold off. Apu eventually marries Shashank Chowdhry, a former student of Doctor Bannerjee. The two of them decide not to sell off the house and make A 46 Gulabganj their home. After moving back in, Apu relives the memories of her childhood and youth. The Tam Brahms and other short stories is a series of incidents of her life as narrated by her.
