My Review:
Getting the first job gives a sense of fulfillment in life. They are the most joyful moments for any person getting employed. Gifts, treats, celebration and savings (if possible) are the basic strategies that one counts on for spending the FIRST salary but surprisingly enough the things do not go lavishly as planned. My dear readers, who have already enjoyed their share of first salary, are well aware of the facts that I am pointing towards but for the others who still have to relish the fruits, here is a piece of wise advice from author – Uttam Kumar.
He is a mathematician and hence a magician of numbers. He presents you with a handy self-help guidance which will motivate you to plan and spend in a wiser but not a miser manner. I understand that every individual has his personal dreams and aspirations related to expenditure as well but there seems no harm in having an understanding beforehand. It will help you in strategizing the financials with a professional touch.
Some of you might think, what is a need of having such a book? I suggest that these days, usually youngsters do not welcome advice from parents and elders with respect to the expenditures and listening to a friend is harm! He attempts to alert you on danger points and actions with such a ease that you will enjoy grasping the essence of the chapters and identify the mistakes with no extra burden on brain cells.
He had structured the book in a ten-chapter format wherein every chapter analyzes the mistake scenario and suggests the actionable with the help of charts and tables. A few might think that these features are not necessary but make the planning confusing. In that case, you can just go through the headers suggested and calibrate your expenses in order to ensure that no head is left unattended.
Please, do not expect and be afraid of lengthy, boring (sometimes confusing) and brain draining explanations and equations or case studies that are generally discussed in books from similar genre. He opts for a fresh and refreshing approach of mentioning the worthy information in point-wise format. This book is equally useful for first-time employees and seasoned employees as well. I am confident that you will have a lot to learn and refresh from what he has packaged in his 44 book.
This comes as a useful book in corporate libraries and public libraries which are hot hunting points for the target markets.
About the Author: Uttam Kumar has a Masters degree in Mathematics. He has had a liking for writing since he was in 9th standard but “First Job and Ten Mistakes” is his first published work. His upcoming books include “The Moment of Truth” and “Recruitment Hijacked”.

Usually it is said that 1st job is every person’s dream and one has to be very precise while taking financial decisions..! The author has aptly caught the right string and has studied human behaviour very nicely …
An individual ( who so ever reads this novel ) will surely relate to these mistakes !!
One can pay heed to these mistakes and can rectify the same , by focusing more on these mistakes…
My verdict..
The author has given 10 wise theories and gritties of the corporate world.. emphasis have been laid on all the levels of management and these theories are made by keeping all the levels in mind..!
The author has used simple language and is easily understandable . If one is joining his/her new job , he/she can use the following theories at the work place and hence will be successful too..!
All in all , uttam kumar has done a brilliant debut with this amazing book and i m sure he will hons his skills in his subsequent efforts..
Blurb – Credit cards are your advance salary and not additional salary.Avoid SpEaR, adopt ESS. Loan for loan is suicidal. It’s always the first step that matters, the rest will follow.
Author Background – The author has done masters in mathematics, spent 19 years in Commercial, Sales, Marketing and Finance! Had a liking for writing since his school days but there was no one to guide so could not do anything. As he attained 35 years of age, he started his own business to take a break from hectic Life. Started writing. “First Job and Ten Mistakes” is his first published work
Review – This is a non-fiction book and comes into the self-help genre. The book 1st job and 10 mistakes is a book for the people who are just starting their careers and their long independent journey of working life. The book tries to provide an overview about financial planning to young people who are beginning their careers but don’t have any knowledge about finances. The book is just 46 pages long in which around 8 pages are just blank tables given for writing long term and short term goals. I generally don’t quote from self-help books as there isn’t much to comment about the writing style.
Merits – The book doesn’t have much errors and writing is fine. Since the last book I read had so many mistakes, this book came as a relief. Although this is a basic necessity which every book should have.
Demerits – I think the author could have done a lot more with this book. There were so many topics on which he could have written more and given in-depth analysis. In self-help books, examples from real life or creating stories around the topic you are writing about helps to engage the readers and allows the author to put forward his point in a better manner. The book lacked on all this front.
The author is skeptical about equity investment and that comes to fore over his emphasis on fixed deposits and telling the young people not to invest in equity market which I felt was a really wrong advice. When a person is starting a career then it is the best time for him to invest in equities as he has no liabilities in his head and he has time in his hand. The banker in me couldn’t control himself but to comment about this topic. I think he missed the inflation and taxation which plays an important role when a person invests in fixed deposits.
Verdict – The book is good as an overview and one can go through as an individual’s point of view and experience. The research is low and it misses the most important point “why” ? If you will work in BFSI industry this “why” is the most common question people will ask. Why I should do financial planning ? Why should I invest in Fixed deposit ? Why is FD better than mutual fund ?

Mr. Uttam Kumar and I got in touch through Twitter. He often retweeted and favorited my tweets and encouraged me as a writer. Little did I know that he himself was one! I came to know about his book at the beginning of this year and that is when I volunteered to review his book for him.
About the Book
Made up of 43 pages, “First Job and Ten Mistakes” is a self-help book that talks about the common mistakes that people make in their first job. In this book Mr. Kumar has spoken about SpEaR Theory, Equity market, Credit cards, Loans, Career Planning and Goal Setting in such simple language that a layman will be able to understand as well as apply the knowledge gained with ease. To make things clearer he has even used real-life examples, which makes the reader realize that these problems are real and can be tackled with proper financial planning! In his book, Mr. Kumar has also provided pages on which the reader can set his/her own Short Term and Long term Career and Financial goals. This is great as he/she will be able to write down his/her goals while reading the book and refer to them later to see if they have been met!
Personally, I feel that this book is a must for everyone who has just got their first job and wants to plan for the future. Since Mr. Kumar has helped many people tackle this issue he is well-versed with the problems that young people face!
With financial freedom comes great responsibility and it is important that a person understands all this before he/she falls into the vicious cycle of loans which never ends!

REVIEW:
The book is, by far, the shortest I have ever read for review. So the review is also going to be unique.
First Impression:
The book is small – way too small than expected. It came as a surprise to me since I hadn’t realised that its total page count was 53. It seemed like a booklet that has all the important points it wanted to convey and was short and sweet.
The cover:
The first thing that attracted me to the book was its brilliant cover design. Starting with the colour scheme, font and the doodles, the cover is pretty attractive. Though I am yet to find the actual connection between the images used in the cover and the concepts covered in the book, this sure caught my eye and therefore led me to pick up the book and read its summary and the other content. So this wins in making the book way more attractive at first sight.
The Summary:
Four short sentences given as the summary give a hint of more content inside. Not to mention the two acronyms using which we get a short idea of what the book is going to be about. It is concise enough to draw the readers in but quickly dispels the notions of any story in the book.
The content:
First Job and Ten Mistakes is NOT a book about the mistakes you would actually do on a job and ways to rectify them. It concentrates instead, on the financial mistakes you might make after you get into a job and earn your salary and also what not to fix as your first job. The ten mistakes are each given as one chapter and the details are almost given as bullet points. The content covers the major points in the said header.
What to expect:
First Job & Ten mistakes is a book you would find informative at the first glance and as a good reference of what you should learn further with more detailed books once you get the basic idea. It also does sound like the ten commandments of finance. Thou shalt not do this – instead, do this!
WHAT I LIKED:
The cover image and the short summary.
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER:
The book could be made a bit more interesting by adding a few examples and case studies. It would add volume to the book and make it even more understandable.
VERDICT:
Go for this! It really is interesting in the way it highlights common mistakes people make financially and also how to skirt around them.
RATING: 4/5
